Heard Around Our Towns...There is news, and then there's lots of talk...

In Bloomingburg –
Seems that Mamakating officials have decided to investigate Bloomingburg to see if anyone's schooling children without proper permits. Meanwhile, the clock ticks on that civil rights complaint about anti-Semitism...

In Mamakating –
How about those LaBudas? Last Sunday afternoon, Peter Labuda of Wurtsboro is saying, he was run over by an ATV driven by his brother, Sullivan County Court Judge Frank LaBuda, putting him in the hospital with a broken leg and broken ribs. He says it was intentional, although no charges have been filed. The Sullivan County sheriff's department is investigating, and the state Office of Court Administration is "monitoring" that investigation. The Judge and his wife, former county legislator Kathy LaBuda, are Democrats; Peter ran as the Republican candidate for Mamakating supervisor last year, unsuccessfully. People in town are saying the two have been at loggerheads for years.

In Shawangunk –
The state comptroller's office has found that the board of the Wallkill Hook, Ladder and Hose Company had not established policies and procedures for cash receipts, cash disbursements, fundraising or the audit of claims; their review covered the period from Jan. 1, 2012, through Feb. 28, 2014 and included various recommendations. Remember when they were going for a big new fire hall?

In Ulster County –
An effort by several members of the Ulster County legislature to change the wording of a referendum on the November ballot asking voters if the county's Family Court should be moved to the county's Business Resource Center in the town of Ulster failed last week, leaving legal action as the only means to now correct what many see as a faulted referendum. Seems everyone is now realizing the wording is a bit... manipulative?

In The 41st Senate District –
Seems that the unfolding federal corruption investigation could have a major impact on the Senate race in New York's 42nd District where longtime Republican incumbent John Bonacic faces Democratic challenger Pramilla Malick. Why? Construction of the CPV gas-fired power plant, mentioned in bribery charges, was promoted by the senator, whose son helped broker the land deal for the plant."These charges... are disturbing. I am asking the Attorney General to conduct an independent investigation into CPV's permitting process," Bonacic said in a press release a day after the charges emerged.

In NY State –
What's this week's big legislative victory? Allowing New Yorkers to be buried with their pets at not-for-profit cemeteries. Slow news week?
