Stone Ridge's Clock Tower Shoppe?
Marbletown Leads Rondout Valley In Commercial Development

STONE RIDGE – The Clock Tower Shoppe development in Stone Ridge is now in the final stages of obtaining approvals at the Marbletown planning board. According to town supervisor Michael Warren, the applicants and their various representatives are currently working out final aesthetic details to get final approvals for their 12,500 square feet commercial entity to be located near the Emmanuel's market plaza on Route 209 near the junction with Route 213.

"Yes, it's still in the planning board, going around and around a bit — fake stone versus real stone, those kinds of things," he noted in a recent conversation. "It's important because it's a gateway. If it was tucked out of sight somewhere it wouldn't matter so much."

Warren explained that the town has long felt that the Emmanuel's Market and attached strip mall "didn't do justice to Marbletown." It was felt to be way out of scale with the village, and after it was built, the town code changed and drew a line at 4,000 square feet for new buildings.

"So, this new development is going to be the gateway, what people will see as they drive in up 209," the supervisor added, noting his "very positive" feelings about the work of Rick Alfandre, the architect on the project, as well as that of Peak Engineering's Nadine Carney and Scott Davis. "At this point they have the concept design settled. Rick Alfandre has done great work there, a nice job breaking up the buildings... there are going to be four of them. They're working on the stormwater plan, the traffic pattern, the septic system. They're very close on a lot of that. And on the designs they're getting down to details on facings and materials. As I've said, if it wasn't the gateway to the town then obviously this wouldn't all be so important. It's in the B-1 business district, where the town decided they wanted business to locate, but it's the first thing people will see. The other thing they've got to get into will be the landscaping aspect."

Warren noted an example of the look that he says the town is looking for.

"Look at the Ulster Savings Bank," he said, pointing out the newer building that sits off 209 on a corner of the Emmanuel's strip mall. "That was built under the new guidelines, which we didn't have when Emmanuel's was built."

Warren added that Rite Aid in the shopping plaza is changing its facade.

"They're back to planning for a new facade," the enthusiastic supervisor said. "Tt will be a big improvement and that end of the mall will have some character and some nice touches."

No information yet on what exactly the new development will contain, though Warren notes that one of the buildings is designed to accommodate a restaurant.

And a clock tower, of course.
